How to recall and use the lessons from history

The time of children holding doors for the elderly, hitch hiking without fear, and the local insurance man making house calls is long ago, but the question remains, why? What has changed in our society that we have come to accept the common sense things like politeness, courtesy, and value are disappearing and that is O.K.?

Without delving too much into the realities of pessimism and the over indulgent society that have been the offspring of such loss, let’s focus on the ideals that we can now learn to set our companies apart from the rest of modern day business.

1. Hold open the doors: This is an easy one to do. When you put out an attitude of helpfulness, people are automatically inclined to draw parallels to the idea that you’re a nice person. Hummm who would have thought. What this means for you in business is that more people are likely to approach you seeking help with their issue. If you have made an effort to genuinely help others out before you are the first person they want to ask. I know that it is much easier to just help those that you want something from, but please for all that is holy, just help everyone you can, because you never know who is watching. With that being said I will repeat what is important to note. Help everyone you CAN. This does not mean help people to your detriment, or loss, and only you are able to make that call.

2. Hitch Hike without fear: Your client’s are hoping to catch a ride with you, that’s it. They don’t want to feel unsure or afraid of what turns you are making or how bumpy the ride is. This is you offering to help them get from point A to point B, as intact as possible. Now for some of you out there it is so easy to speed, find a wall to kiss, or even drive right past your passengers, but I can assure you that if you give your clients a road map, some direction and a lot of confidence in your car, they will always call you for a ride. So this means that your goal is to drive the vehicle as smoothly, and directly as possible to help your client arrive alive.

3. House Calls: Go above and beyond your competition and yourself. This is where most companies fall flat. The tradition of house calls has been replaced by 24 hour help lines, and online forums. It is more of a “find it yourself” call. Remembering that the point of a house call was to provide value to your clients, we need to use this to our advantage. “I don’t provide a service” or “I can’t really offer much more” are both lame excuses, so let’s move beyond them immediately. The real questions you need to ask are HOW can I apply this “house call” method to my company?

This will be answered in our next blog the “Value beyond limits” so take with you the idea that we can turn back the clock on some things that have been lost, things that should have NEVER changed.
